Year 10 & 11 Poetry Essay Writing Masterclass

On Wednesday 16th November, the English Department were pleased to offer our Year 10 and 11 students the exciting opportunity to take part in a GCSE Poetry Essay Writing Masterclass.

The aim of the masterclass was to challenge students and equip them with strategies and tips for writing top level essays on the Power and Conflict Anthology (part of the GCSE English Literature course).

We were impressed by how many students volunteered to attend (giving up their own time as the session was after school in the Main Hall) which really showed their dedication to improving their skills in English. The students were engaged and worked hard throughout the session, producing some excellent ‘upgraded analytical sentences’ and great discussion points relating to thesis statements and a top level example essay. Feedback was very positive and we do hope that pupils found the session useful and challenging.

The English Department will be running a masterclass each half term, focusing on a different topic each time with a continued focus on stretching and challenging our pupils and inspiring them to strive for the top grades. The dates and topics of these will be communicated to students and parents and it would be fantastic to see a similar turnout next time.
