Year 12 Aim Higher Week

The Warlingham College Team was delighted by the success of our Aim Higher week at the beginning of June when Year 12 students started to think about their next steps for life after College. At such an exciting juncture in students’ lives, it was great to see them start to research their options and consider what they want to achieve in the future.

The week began with two days based in school where students had a combination of talks and workshops on the different options they could pursue including how to register for UCAS and apply for University. A big part of the application process is writing a personal statement and so students were encouraged to sell themselves as well as their love of the subject. A representative from the London Southbank University visited the school to share top tips on writing a personal statement with the students.

At the same time, students were introduced to apprenticeships in terms of what they are, how to search for an apprenticeship and what was involved in the process. Students were also extremely positive about their visit from Gatwick Airport and enthused by the different possible routes they could take to train with them in their chosen career. In addition, those students interested in an apprenticeship route were also given a talk from a Metropolitan Police Detective about what is involved in working in such a role and the routes for pursuing the career.

On Wednesday 7th June, the day started with a question and answer session from some of our former Warlingham Sixth Form College students. It was great to catch up with a number of our former students who have gone on to brilliant things including practising as a solicitor, training to become a doctor and working in the financial sector. We were very proud of our Alumni and extremely grateful to them for sharing their advice and guidance to our current students on their experiences and how to achieve their ambitions in the future.

Following the support offered in school, a trip was organised involving half of Year 12 visiting a University and Apprenticeship Fair based at the Amex Stadium in Brighton. A huge number of universities were represented along with apprenticeships and students enjoyed discussing their options with them, as well as picking up a number of prospectuses and freebies – tote bags proved to be particularly popular! Those students who attended once again conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and it was a pleasure to accompany them on the trip.

The College team hope that students enjoyed the week and made the most of the opportunities available to them. We hope they are excited to research their options and looking forward to the next stage in their lives whatever they decide to do next. We’re confident that they will have a very bright future and hope they’ll stay in touch to let us know what they’re getting up to as well as to share any advice to our current students. If they need any support with their research then please do not hesitate to contact the team and be sure to check our new padlet which contains a wealth of information below.
