SUMMER TERM     EDITION 13
19 JULY 2022

Message from the Headteacher

Photo of Paul FosterWhen we developed our ability to deliver learning remotely during the COVID-19 lockdowns, I did wonder whether this would become our model for managing school closures due to extreme weather conditions… however, I must admit it was snow that I had in mind in those imaginings rather than the extreme heat of this week! Thank you for your support as we made the difficult decision to move to remote learning in order to best support ongoing learning and ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff.

Photo of Lake District Camping I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the incredibly special Activities Week that has just passed. The amazing array of opportunities for students last week - ranging from experiencing the world of work for Year 12 and Year 10 students, a PGL residential trip to Shropshire for Year 9, Paris for Year 8 and camping in the Lake District for Year 7, along with a host of activities in school, as well as day trips to zoos, museums leisure and theme parks – was a remarkable feat of logistical planning and of incredible benefit to our students.

As part of our registration activities, students have the opportunity to learn about and debate topics each week, using resources from VotesforSchools. This helps provide students with a wider understanding of current affairs, develops their empathy and kindness skills when considering sensitive issues, and also enables them to practise forming arguments and debating.

Furthermore, they have their voices heard as VotesforSchools shares the voting outcomes with a variety of organisations, including governments and charities.

Recently, students have discussed the topics 'Should the Homes for Ukraine scheme be for more refugees?' and 'Is it right that the Prime Minister kept his job after ‘partygate’?'

See the latest vote results below with our school's results indexed against the national votes.

I have had the privilege this year of working alongside an incredible Head Boy and Head Girl team and one particular highlight was the Johnson charity quiz that they organised a couple of weeks ago. The quiz saw teams of teachers from each house compete against each other and students paid to watch. The rounds tested teachers' knowledge of Warlingham and a personal favourite was staff baby photos!

A couple of weeks ago, our Year 8 students took part in the classwork competition. All houses took part and chose a piece of classwork that they were most proud of to put on display.

Students had to organise the display and present the work in a creative way. We are so proud of our Sharman students and excited to hear the results at prize giving! Well done 8G and 8N for producing fantastic classwork across so many subjects. Here's what some of our Sharman Students had to say about the competition.
