Business, Enterprise & Marketing

Our vision is to develop well-rounded learners to be able to enter the workplace with a strong understanding of business and economic (KS5) concepts.

We aim to achieve this by preparing students to enter the workplace and understand their potential roles and future aspirations. We develop the Warlingham Learner within business studies to nurture qualities such as communication, problem-solving, self-management, teamwork, resilience, creativity, digital and financial skills. We enable students to become ‘proactive readers’ and have a developed understanding of type 2 & type 3 vocabulary within the business world.

Our curriculum aims to ensure that all students develop a sound Business and Economic knowledge, conceptual understanding and Skills and Learner attributes through the disciplines of marketing, enterprise, Business and Economic principles. The curriculum is a progression model, through which Economic and Business theories and concepts are developed and built upon. Our Core Concepts, through which all aspects of Enterprise, Marketing, Business and Economics are:

  • The links between revenue and costs and their impact on Business finance.
  • Factors affecting supply and demand for goods and services in the market.
  • The role of Human resources in small and growing business.
  • External influences on the business including legislation, exchange and interest rates, unemployment and inflation.

Unit 1 – Exploring Business

In this introductory unit, learners study the purposes of different businesses, their structure, the effect of the external environment and how they need to be dynamic and innovative to survive. Learners will:

  • Explore the features of different businesses and analyse what makes them successful
  • Investigate how businesses are organised
  • Examine the environment in which businesses operate
  • Examine business markets
  • Investigate the role and contribution of innovation and enterprise to business success.

Unit 2 – Developing a Marketing Campaign

Learners will gain skills relating to, and an understanding of, how a marketing campaign is developed. Learners will cover:

  • Introduction to the principles and purposes of marketing that underpin the creation of a rationale for a marketing campaign
  • Using information to develop the rationale for a marketing campaign
  • Planning and developing a marketing campaign

Year 13

Unit 3 – Personal and Business Finance

  • Understand the importance of managing personal finance
  • Explore the personal finance sector
  • Understand the purpose of accounting
  • Select and evaluate different sources of business finance
  • Break-even and cash flow forecasts
  • Complete statements of comprehensive income and financial position and evaluate a business's performance

Unit 8 – Recruitment and Selection

Learners explore how the recruitment process is carried out in a business. The unit gives learners the opportunity to participate in selection interviews and review their performance. Learners will:

  • Examine how effective recruitment and selection contribute to business success
  • Undertake a recruitment activity to demonstrate the processes leading to a successful job offer
  • Reflect on the recruitment and selection process and your individual performance.
